Diski was educated at University College London, and worked as a teacher during the 1970s and early 1980s. Diski was a regular contributor to the London Review of Books; the collections Don't and A View from the Bed include articles and essays written for the publication.

In September 2014 Jenny Diski began writing in the London Review of Books, describing her experience of living with terminal cancer, examining her life and history with Doris Lessing: the fairy-tale rescue from 'the bin' as a teenager, the difficulties of being absorbed into an unfamiliar family and the influence this had on her.

Before becoming a full-time writer, she worked as an English teacher.
